Utah's NEVI program funds direct current fast charging stations spaced 50 miles apart along major corridors (I-15, I-70, I-80, I-84, I-215, and portions of US-6 and US-191) and near Utah's national and state parks, making long-distance EV travel more convenient. You won't apply directly—the state's Department of Transportation selects private operators and partners to build and own these charging stations, but you'll benefit from improved access to publicly available charging infrastructure.
As a charging provider or operator, you can apply to UDOT's competitive Request for Applications (RFA) rounds to win conditional awards for NEVI-funded direct current fast charging sites; Phase 1.A closed in August 2024, with selected recipients receiving partial project funding (e.g., $660,585 and $488,112 for awarded sites) and matching the remainder of costs. Projects must install NEVI-compliant DCFC ports spaced according to federal standards, and awarded sites are added to UDOT's partnering directory to facilitate future collaborations and funding announcements.
Utah receives a share of the $5 billion federal NEVI formula program to deploy EV charging along designated alternative fuel corridors and high-priority routes to national parks and other attractions. UDOT manages competitive RFA rounds, awards conditional grants to eligible applicants (requiring cost-share matches), and tracks project completion milestones; Phase I achieved Built Out Certification in October 2025, with Phase II planned for 2026. As of February 2025, new federal guidance suspended approval of new state plans but allows reimbursement of existing obligations and awarded contracts.

Program summary
Note: The Federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) created the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Grant Program with a total budget of $5 billion. Each state was allocated a share of that total to help build out a national network of electric vehicle charging stations along designated alternative fuel corridors (AFCs). With some limited exceptions, EV charging stations funded through the NEVI program should be spaced 50 miles apart and within one mile of the Interstate exit or highway.
The Utah Department of Transportation’s (UDOT) NEVI plan includes achieving build out status along the state's AFCs including I-15, I-70, I-80, I-84, I-215, and portions of US-6 and US-191.The state also plans to identify and begin building high-priority corridors that provide access to Utah’s five National Parks, forty-two State Parks, and other places of interest. Utah plans to use a blend of contracting approaches to complete the projects. An updated plan was published in August 2023. Much of the plan remains the same with most of the updates being in response to the newly issued NEVI Standards and Requirements 23 CFR 680. In December 2023, UDOT published a list of recipients who have received conditional awards for the RFA -Phase 1.
