Idaho - National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Grant Program

The NEVI program funds DC fast charging stations along Idaho's designated highway corridors (I-15, I-84, I-90, and several U.S. routes), which will offer 150+ kW charging capability spaced roughly 50 miles apart near interstate exits. As a driver, you'll benefit from a more connected charging network, though the program is currently paused for federal review and individual homeowners cannot directly apply for grants.
Eligible entities (states, municipalities, tribes, or special districts) can apply for NEVI formula funds to develop DCFC stations meeting strict requirements: at least four CCS ports with 150 kW output each (600 kW total station capacity) located within one mile of designated Alternative Fuel Corridors. Idaho completed its Siting, Feasibility, and Access Study in July 2024 identifying optimal locations based on traffic volume, electrical infrastructure, and community proximity; interested developers should register on the state's NEVI Networking List to connect with potential site hosts.
NEVI is a $5 billion federal formula program administered by FHWA, with Idaho's share allocated to develop charging infrastructure along 12 designated corridors. The Office of Energy and Mineral Resources, Idaho Transportation Department, and Department of Environmental Quality jointly manage the program; the July 2024 Siting, Feasibility, and Access Study ranked locations using multifactor criteria including daily traffic, proximity to disadvantaged and tribal communities, and electrical substation access. The program is currently paused pending federal agency review, and funding is restricted to designated AFCs until the Secretary of Transportation certifies corridor buildout standards are met.

Program summary
Note: The Federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) created the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Grant Program with a total budget of $5 billion. Each state was allocated a share of that total to help build out a national network of electric vehicle charging stations along designated alternative fuel corridors (AFCs). With some limited exceptions, EV charging stations funded through the NEVI program should be spaced 50 miles apart and within one mile of the Interstate exit or highway.
In August 2022, Idaho released its EV Infrastructure Baseline Plan. A few months later, in December 2022, the state issued an RFP, seeking a firm to complete the Siting, Feasibility, and Access Study (SFAS) for DCFC buildout. The SFAS identifies strategic locations based on approved multifactor selection criteria. In August 2023, an updated state plan was released. The update includes a summary of public engagement activities, an update on a proposed RFP solicitation for two pilot sites, and the progress of the SFAS. The pilot sites will be evaluated for the effectiveness of the procurement process, efficiency of contracting, and issues with site selection and constitution to inform the selection and construction of additional sites in the buildout of AFCs. Since the release of federal guidance in June 2023, detailed location results and siting criteria are being developed. The SFAS was scheduled to be completed by December 2023 and will outline the approach to achieving fully built out status on all AFCs.
