This program funds DC fast charging stations along major highways and interstates in Michigan, not individual home charging. If you own an EV, you benefit from expanded public fast-charging access spaced roughly 50 miles apart near interstate exits, making long-distance travel more feasible.
You can bid on NEVI funding to build and operate DC fast charging stations meeting federal infrastructure standards along Michigan's alternative fuel corridors. Michigan allocates funds through competitive rounds—Round 1 (April 2024) awarded $22.7 million, and Round 2 (August 2024) offered roughly $27 million—with stations required to be within one mile of interstate exits.
NEVI distributes Michigan's share of the $5 billion federal program to build highway EV charging networks. The state operates a competitive grant process with multiple rounds; applicants must meet federal siting requirements (50-mile spacing, highway proximity) and can be private companies or public entities. Program summary
Note: The Federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) created the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Grant Program with a total budget of $5 billion. Each state was allocated a share of that total to help build out a national network of electric vehicle charging stations along designated alternative fuel corridors (AFCs). With some limited exceptions, EV charging stations funded through the NEVI program should be spaced 50 miles apart and within one mile of the Interstate exit or highway.
Michigan released the selection results for Round 1 of its NEVI funding in April 2024; this round allocated roughly $22.7 million. Michigan plans to release a Request for Proposals for a second round of funding in August 2024, with roughly $27 million to be allocated.
