Texas Clean School Bus Program

This program is currently closed as of May 2025 and provided grants to Texas public school districts and charter schools for replacing older diesel school buses or retrofitting them with emission-control equipment. While the program is not accepting applications, eligible schools could previously receive up to 80% of incremental costs for bus replacement or retrofit projects to reduce diesel emissions.

This program is currently closed as of May 2025. Previously, vendors and contractors supplied replacement buses or retrofit systems (crankcase filters, particulate filters, oxidation catalysts) to Texas public school districts and charter schools; eligible buses for replacement were 2006 model year or older, and retrofit candidates needed five years of remaining useful life. Schools were responsible for submitting applications with documentation to TCEQ, and contractors would support the purchase and installation process.

The Texas Clean School Bus Program, administered by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) as part of the Texas Emissions Reduction Plan (TERP), provided grants to reduce diesel emissions from school buses serving public school districts and open-enrollment charter schools across Texas. The program covered replacement of pre-2006 diesel buses or retrofit installations, with eligible costs capped at 80% of incremental cost or a published maximum grant amount; applicants submitted online through TERP Online SUNSS (for replacements) or secure upload (for retrofits). The program is currently closed as of May 2025.
