First Energy Ohio - Renewable Energy Credit Procurements

This program does not apply to homeowners. FirstEnergy's Renewable Energy Credit Procurements are limited to commercial-sector renewable energy projects that generate RECs or SRECs; individual residential installations do not qualify.

Commercial renewable energy developers and operators can sell Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) or Solar Renewable Energy Credits (SRECs) to FirstEnergy through periodic Request for Proposals (RFPs). You must be certified by the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio and submit applications during open windows; check the program website regularly since RFP timing is not on a fixed schedule. Recent short-term procurements have sought credits from Ohio or contiguous states, with SRECs required to be generated within specific calendar years.

FirstEnergy Ohio Utilities (Cleveland Electric Illuminating, Toledo Edison, and Ohio Edison) conduct competitive REC/SREC procurements as part of their Electric Security Plan filings. The program purchases Renewable Energy Credits only—not energy or capacity—from eligible commercial technologies (solar PV, wind, geothermal, biomass, fuel cells, hydroelectric, landfill gas, and municipal solid waste) originating in Ohio or adjacent states. All applicants must hold Public Utilities Commission of Ohio certification; RFP windows open irregularly and require monitoring of the program website for current solicitation schedules and credit volumes.
