Program Summary

Legislation enacted in 2009 directed the Maine Public Utilities Commission (PUC) to develop a program offering green power as an option to residential and small commercial customers in the state, after which legislation was enacted in 2021 continuing the program. The PUC issued rules in October 2010 and issued an RFP. The PUC selected a company, 3 Degrees Group, Inc., to manage the statewide green power program for Maine, which launched in April 2012.

The program purchases renewable energy certificates from qualified Maine renewable resources on behalf of Green Power customers.

The program seeks to obtain 25% of its power from Maine Class I renewable energy projects that have been placed into service or refurbished on or after September 1, 2005, or from locally-owned community based renewable energy projects to the extent possible. Power purchased through the Maine Green Power program may not be used toward a supplier's RPS compliance.Customers of Central Maine Power or Versant Power are eligible to participate. Maine Green Power costs an additional 1.8 cents/kWh. Customers may purchase Green Power in blocks of 500 kWh/month for $8.95/block. Residential customers may purchase up to 4 blocks and also have the option of purchasing a half-block. More information about the program and enrollment may be found here.
