Program Summary

Green Power Purchasing Executive Order By an executive order from the Mayor's Office, City of Lansing facilities are required to procure 10% of their energy consumption from renewable sources by 2010, escalating to 15% in 2015 and 20% in 2020. This green power purchasing policy is part of a broader initiative designed to reduce the contribution that city facilities make to greenhouse gas emissions and climate change. Several additional provisions apart from green power procurement are contained in the order, among them a goal of reducing energy use in city facilities by 10% as soon as it is practical and mandates that city facilities purchase EPA ENERGY STAR certified appliances and hybrid/renewable fuel vehicles unless an otherwise demonstrable need exists.Lansing Board of Water & Light Renewable PortfolioBWL provides electricity and water to Lansing and East Lansing, Michigan, in 2007 the utility became the first in the state to adopt a renewable energy portfolio. The BWL is now committed to providing 50 percent clean energy by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2040. The municipally-owned public utility services 97,000 electric customers and 56,000 water customers in the greater Lansing area.
