Tennessee - Green Power Purchase

Tennessee Governor Don Sundquist inaugurated the state's new energy policy in April 2002 by announcing that all state buildings in Nashville, including the governor's mansion, will obtain a portion of their electricity from renewable energy sources. The state government discontinued this purchase in 2003 due to the budget crisis and higher cost involved with the purchase of green power. The state's green power purchase amounted to 720,000 kWh per year, for which it paid an additional $19,000 annually. The purchase was through the Tennessee Valley Authority's (TVA) Green Power Switch Program, which provides energy from wind, solar, and landfill gas.
